M.D., Ph.D.

Yoshiko Bamba

I am aiming for a safer and optimal surgery using surgical robot and laparoscope.

We this time decided to introduce 3 Da Vinci Xi robotic surgical systems and a domestic surgical robot in the operating room of TWMU. These robots enable us to perform more precise surgeries and are expected to lead to a decrease in postoperative complications.

When I began my career as a surgeon, laparotomy was a mainstream. Since I was then interested in laparoscopic surgery, I learned it in Osaka Medical and Pharmaceutical University Hospital (OMPU) from 2009 and gained the Endoscopic surgical skill qualification certificated by Japan society for endoscopic surgery. Recently, robot-assisted surgery is increasingly prevalent, and surgical skills are rapidly changing and developing. Even in these present circumstances, the contents of colorectal cancer operation such as intestine resection and node dissection have not changed. The fundamental thinking on radical cancer treatment have not changed, even though surgical tools have rapidly been changing. I never give up on cancer patients who have hard-to-treat ones. I am always aimed at the best treatments for my patients, establishing a trust relationship with patients and their families. Our TWMU team including specialists in anticancer drugs and radiation therapy works as one to provide the best medical care.

After I was graduated from TWMU in 2000, I received residency training at Yokohama Shin-Midori General Hospital and Chichibu Municipal Hospital for a total of 3 years. Since then, I have been committed to clinical practice, medical research, and education in TWMU. Especially for the past 5 years, I have undertaken research in artificial intelligence with a creative mind for colorectal cancer. Beginning with image recognition, I recently analyze the content of surgical procedure using AI, and aim to automatic surgery in future years. I am also very active in challenging physical training such as mountain climbing and marathon, to make best decision even during prolonged procedures. I myself continue to strive every day to get words of encouragement from my patients like “I come to see you and your smile!” for years to come.

Focusing on the medical procedure of the next decade, I will flexibly respond to changes in cutting-edge medical technologies and aim to improve the outcome of colorectal cancer treatment.
